Health Benefits of Cannabidiol

Cannabidiol, better known by its popularized acronym CBD, is one of over 100 chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, it is not psychoactive.

While it doesn’t get consumers high, it does confer many health benefits. Read on to find out about just a few of the health benefits of CBD.

Pain Relief

People have been using cannabis to treat pain for thousands of years. Recently, scientists have discovered that CBD is the primary compound responsible for creating the plant’s pain-relieving effects. It works with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates pain, to offer relief for patients suffering from diverse chronic pain conditions including sciatic nerve pain, inflammation, and arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and others.

Reduction of Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression are common in today’s society, with depression ranked by the World Health Organization as the largest contributor to disability. Although medical researchers have developed pharmaceutical drugs to treat both these conditions, these drugs come with a host of unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects. CBD has been shown to alleviate anxiety and depression naturally by acting on the brain’s serotonin receptors.

Ease Cancer Symptoms

While CBD alone is not an effective treatment for cancer, it can help to ease some symptoms of more effective treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. Chemotherapy causes nausea and vomiting, while both radiation treatments and cancer itself can cause substantial pain. CBD has been shown to be effective in treating that pain and some contemporary research even shows that it may help to inhibit the spread of certain aggressive cancer cells.

Neuroprotective Properties

CBD also has neuroprotective properties, which make it effective for treating patients suffering from neurological disorders including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Dravet syndrome, and others. Recent studies have also been conducted evaluating its effectiveness for patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and other forms of cognitive decline.

Lowered Blood Pressure

High blood pressure increases patients’ risk of developing health conditions like strokes, heart attacks, and metabolic syndromes. Some researchers have suggested that it is CBD’s stress and anxiety-reducing properties that help consumers keep their blood pressure in check. Others believe its powerful antioxidant properties reduce inflammation and cell death related to heart disease, lowering blood pressure by this physical mechanism, but either way, it works.
